Haier Dryer Fire Risk

Recently we inspected a Haier clothes dryer after the owner reported a burning smell coming from the unit. On opening the rear housing, we discovered that a fire had occurred inside the dryer cabinet.
The customer had been very diligent about maintenance. The lint filters were cleaned regularly and the appliance had been used correctly. However, in this case the problem was not caused by poor maintenance.
What Happened Inside the Dryer
During our inspection we found that lint had travelled through the internal air passage and built up around the fan assembly. Over time this lint restricted the airflow through the dryer.
When airflow is reduced, heat cannot move through the appliance properly. The heating elements then operate at much higher temperatures than intended.
In this dryer, the restricted airflow caused the heating elements to overheat. The excessive heat ignited the lint inside the rear housing, resulting in a fire within the appliance cabinet.
Manufacturer Recall on Some Haier Dryers
The appliance in this case is still under manufacturer warranty. The manufacturer has recognised that some models have a design issue that allows lint to pass through the air passage and accumulate around internal components.
Because of this risk, some Haier dryers are currently being recalled so the issue can be addressed.
If you own a Haier dryer and have noticed unusual heat, burning smells, or reduced drying performance, it is important to have the appliance inspected promptly.
Why Professional Inspection Matters
Dryers operate at high temperatures and rely heavily on correct airflow. Even small restrictions can create serious overheating risks inside the appliance.
At John Crawford Appliance Repairs, we regularly diagnose faults in dryers, ovens, cooktops and other hard-wired household appliances throughout Armidale and the New England region.
With more than 30 years of appliance repair experience, we focus on careful fault finding and safe, reliable repairs. If a dryer shows signs of overheating, burning smells, or poor airflow, a professional inspection can identify the cause before serious damage occurs.
Common Warning Signs to Watch For
- Dryer taking much longer than normal to dry clothes
- A hot or burning smell during operation
- Excessive heat from the rear or sides of the appliance
- Dryer stopping unexpectedly during a cycle
If you experience any of these issues, it is best to stop using the appliance and arrange a professional inspection.
