Fixing a Miele Washer Dryer Fault in Armidale

We were recently called to assess a Miele combination washer/dryer in Armidale that had stopped drying clothes properly. While the washing cycle was working as expected, the drying function had failed - prompting the customer to get in touch.
After a detailed inspection, we found that both the fan and heating elements were not functioning. At first glance, it appeared the fan motor was overheating, potentially from a burnt-out winding. However, the true cause was more complex.
The issue began with warping in the plastic housing around the drying fan, most likely caused by heat build-up during previous drying cycles. This warping caused the fan impeller to seize, stopping airflow through the heater channel. With no air movement, the heater elements overheated, triggering the thermal cut-out safety devices to disconnect power to the heating system. The fan motor, still receiving power but unable to spin, became hot. Thankfully, it was protected by an internal thermal overload switch and avoided damage.
To confirm the diagnosis, we disassembled and tested the fan unit. The scraping noise from the impeller confirmed physical obstruction - tracing back to the warped housing. Rather than replacing the entire unit, we carefully reshaped the fan housing using heat and refitted it. We also replaced a failed thermal cut-out device that had melted during the fault.
The washer/dryer is now expected to return to normal operation, restoring full drying functionality for the customer.
